Reading buddies...

Last week I started volunteering as a reading buddy for first grade students.  I decided to do this because reading is SO important for helping children keep up with the rest of their education.  The kids in this program are already behind their classmates, I'm hopeful that our team will help them catch up.

The children I've met so far are very intelligent, but for whatever reasons they are struggling.  I'm finding that the girls are little chatterboxes, (once the initial shyness wears off), but the boys, (so far), are more reserved...maybe that's not the exact word, but less willing to visit openly.  One little guy acted ashamed and told me "I don't read very good."  I just smiled and told him that's why we are here, to practice and get better!

I've only spent a couple of hours with the kids so far, but I'm enjoying meeting these little characters.  I hope that we can help each other out through the little friendships we are developing, while sharing books.  :)  Maybe I should have become a librarian?  ;)
